:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Margaret Smith -- READ THIS ONE!!! : Riders Of The Purple Sage is one of my all-time favorite novels. It happens to be a Western although I'm not particularly drawn to this genre. Zane Grey's story is riveting with a plot that includes love as well as a compelling mystery which comes together and finally is revealed fully at the end. It takes place in the mid- to late-1800s in Mormon Utah where women are controlled and kept silent by the bullying men -- except for Jane Withersteen who refuses to submit to their torment and to a loveless marriage. She is tragic -- full of untold secrets -- but also strong and determined. Lassiter, a wanted gun man, arrives looking for the grave of his beloved and dead sister, Milly Erne, and interrupts the intended murder of Jane's young ranch hand, Venters. Over time, Lassiter becomes Jane's protector and love slowly grows. Meanwhile, Venters searches for a gang of rustlers who seem to be absconding with Jane's cattle herd and shoots their infamous "masked rider", who surprisingly turns out to be a teenage girl. He finds a hidden valley -- a sort of Shangri La -- where he nurses her back to health and where they eventually grow to love each other. The story then takes off in full force as the mystery deepens, love intensifies and the Mormon bad guys become really nasty. Grey truly is a master story teller. The Rainbow Trail made a huge impression on me, so much so that I still remember the names of the protagonists--John Shefford and Fay Larkin--40 years later! Grey’s novel, a romantic adventure and a mystery story, is at the foundation of the American Western. This edition contains a wealth of recent background essays concerning several aspects of the novel, including the geographical locations of the story as well as a review of five motion picture versions between 1918 and 1996. - 2.0 out of 5 stars from Ecowitch -- this is an enjoyable read if you like romance, drama and inner turmoil but if you ... : This has been described as the most popular western of all time and the novel that established the format of the modern western genre but to be honest I'd describe this as more of a romance novel set against an Old West backdrop. Grey's writing is vivid and engrossing but the story itself is not what I expected with Jane's internal dilemma taking more of the pages than gunslinger battles or epic horse chases (in fact there was a distinct lack of these). Added to this is the secondary story of Venters and Bess and their relationship that develops as Venters cares for Bess following his shooting of her. Don't get me wrong, this is an enjoyable read if you like romance, drama and inner turmoil but if you want a good proper Western story you may want to avoid this one. Not what I expected at all. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Trilby -- Gripping Western novel : I was curious to read this novel as I had heard that a family member, many decades ago, used to devour Zane Grey novels. By all accounts this was Grey's most famous. I expected something rather dated, but was pleasantly surprised to find myself really enjoying it. The author appears (like Conan Doyle in one of his novels) to bear a grudge against Mormons, for this tale concerns the efforts of one particular community to browbeat the independent-minded heroine, Jane, into marriage with a particularly nasty one of their number. Despite the evidence, she seems to bear a naively benign view of the Mormon church (of which she is a member), although this view is increasingly challenged as her staff and possessions are increasingly threatened as the "encouragement" for her to marry intensifies. A mysterious dark stranger, Lassiter, who has his own reasons for despising Mormons, comes to her rescue - first to save her cattle, but ultimately her life. The dialogue may at times be limited, and I don't claim there is enormous subtlety in it, but I found myself turning the pages rapidly as the story advanced, and came to its denouement. I don't know how typical this is of his work, but understand it was the novel that launched his literary career. In essence it involves two hero-heroine relationships set against the background of mid nineteenth century Utah and the oppressive nature of the Mormon Church and its communities. The plot is bizarre - a convoluted tale of wicked Mormons who capture, marry and imprison `gentile' women and absorb them into the Mormon faith. Lassiter, the lone gunman, is seeking one of these lost women. Jane Withersteen, born a Mormon, is under pressure to marry against her will - and this pressure involves the rustling of her herds of cattle and the loss of her servants and riders. Much of the central part of the book is about Bern Venters, one of Jane's riders (men who guard the cattle) and his meeting with a mysterious girl and discovery of a hidden, Eden-like valley.
